The Flemish town of Riemst, where your route starts, is located at an altitude of approximately 113 meters. It is not the only hill you will encounter today, because you will cycle here through a rolling, agricultural landscape. You will even climb St. Peter's Basilica today! The starting and ending point of your route is the attractive Hotel Malpertuus, a great place to start your route with a hot cup of coffee or a fresh drink. After completing the route, you can relax on the garden terrace for lunch or a delicious dinner. You will come across special places such as Fort Eben-Emael, known as 'the giant among forts'. The Belgian army built this colossus with an area of 75 hectares (150 football fields) in 1932-1935, but the Germans managed to capture it in 1940 with an explosive, thorough and daring attack plan. Between the banks of the Meuse and the Albert Canal is also the Maison de la Montagne Saint-Pierre museum, dedicated to the unique Sint-Pietersberg.
Centuries of marl extraction have created an impressive underground tunnel system in this area and the calcareous soil is home to many rare species such as wall lizards and orchids. This route also takes you to vibrant Maastricht. The Jekerkwartier, the Latin Quarter of Maastricht, is one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the city. With the nice cafes and old houses around the city walls, you really enter a different world here. Maastricht is a beautiful historic city, but you can also have fun in terms of design, because the eastern bank of the Maas has taken on a whole new face in recent years with the Center Céramique and the Bonnefanten Museum.
