The village originated at the confluence of the Rode Beek and the Geleenbeek, and was probably founded at the beginning of the eighth century. The name of the village is a combination of Roode Beek and Susteren. There are two beautiful castles near the village, Ter Borch Castle and Eijckholt Castle, which now houses catering establishments.
