Roosteren is a church village with approximately 1500 inhabitants. The village is located on the Meuse opposite the Belgian town of Maaseik. The village originated at the confluence of the Rode beek and the Geleenbeek, and was probably founded at the beginning of the eighth century. The name of the village is a combination of Roode beek and Susteren. Near the village are two beautiful castles, Kasteel Ter Borch and Kasteel Eijckholt, which now house catering establishments.
