Around Markelo it is wonderful to cycle on car-free roads. You cycle through a slightly undulating coulisse landscape of fields, grasslands and small wooded areas. Just past junction 5 you see the famous radio and television tower of Markelo. It was officially opened in 1959 and is 148 metres high including the mast. For those with a carpenter's eye: the tower is 23 centimetres out of plumb. There is a replica of this tower in Madurodam. Around junction 97 you cycle through the forests of the Rijssense Veld. Further on you will visit another nature reserve: the Borkeld. Here you will find a mosaic of forests, fields and grasslands. The largest juniper shrub in the Netherlands also grows here. The route ends at Vakantiepark Buitencentrum Hessenheem, an ideal base for exploring Twente and Salland.
