Boskamp, Heerde and Epe

Explore the banks of the IJssel and see with your own eyes the robust floodplains of the IJsseldelta. The Roetwaarden near Den Nul are shaped by sand extraction points, which have already been deeply excavated. A special pioneer vegetation grows on the east bank; tough plants that manage to survive on poor soils and pave the way for more colorful species. On and around the lakes you will find many water birds, which keep themselves alive with what the water offers them. Birds of prey also know how to find their way, because above the flat land it is easy to recognize and catch prey.

During your bike ride you will pass the fortified house called Groot Hoenlo. This manor, surrounded by a beautiful estate, is first mentioned in 1233. Next to Groot Hoenlo is Klein Hoenlo, a house also known as the widow's house. The beautiful main building has been rebuilt several times over the centuries. Since 2001, the house with accompanying estate is a protected national monument. Unfortunately, the site is not publicly accessible.
