On February 22, 1945, the plane the 'Jolly Duck' made an emergency landing in the Geerpolder near Zoetermeer after a bombing raid on Germany. The nine crew members of the B-24 Liberator immediately fled in all directions. However, four crew members were immediately captured by the Germans. Four others found a safe house that same day. The ninth crew member, John McCormick, a twenty-three year old gunner from Pennsylvania, was discovered by a farmer on February 26, 1945 in a haystack of a farm on the ZegWaarweg.
The Zoetermeer resistance subsequently housed him in a hunting lodge in Zevenhuizen, where he was killed on April 29, 1945, after a German raid.
