Lummen, Zonhoven and Stokrooie

In the heart of the Kempen region lies an area inhabited as early as 11,000 years before Christ. The first farmers tried to cultivate the surrounding sandy soils, laying the foundation for what would become Zonhoven. The felling of the primeval forest in the past changed the terrain. Gradually, it became covered with heathland, fields, and grasslands. In the immediate vicinity of Zonhoven, you'll find the Teut nature reserve. This nature reserve was established in 1976 and expanded in 1979. Fens, ponds, heathland, and pine forests create a beautiful haven. The magnificent sundew and the bog asphodel grow here, for example. Birdwatchers will also find plenty to see here, with birds such as the nightjar, tree pipit, and woodlark.
