Westerkwartier RTV-Noord

During your cycle tour you will be introduced to the most beautiful places in the Groningen landscape and you will discover the importance of good water management. The villages here lie in a ribbon along one gently winding main road. At right angles to this stretch long, narrow plots of grassland, separated by tree belts. This characteristic image of the Southern Westerkwartier is the result of the way in which the region has been cultivated. The villages are located on narrow sand ridges. The peat was extracted from those ridges, each owner from his own plot straight back according to the 'right of extension'.
