Are you looking for a hiking area where you are completely alone for large parts of the walk, apart from large flocks of birds? Then the Markstien hiking trail, which runs through the beautiful nature reserve of Tøndermarsken, is just the thing for you!
Markstien is a new 54 km hiking trail that takes you through Denmark's largest marshland, also known as Tøndermarsken. The landscape does not consist of wild nature, but has been shaped by human hands over the centuries, during life with and against the water. You will see dikes, fields, pumping stations and canals. This living historical landscape is also an excellent place to spot many species of birds. Part of the area is a national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Marsktien hiking trail is circular, so you can start anywhere and you can walk the route in either direction. Along the way there are eight loops ranging in length from 2.7 km to 12 km. The walking path is unpaved and you mainly walk on the grass. During the summer mowing is done, but in some places the vegetation can sometimes be high. Good walking shoes are therefore recommended.
