Explore the municipality of Zutendaal, which consists of a number of hamlets and is located in the Hoge Kempen National Park. The Hoge Kempen National Park, which covers a total of 5,750 hectares, was named in 2006 as the first national park in Flanders. The Hoge Kempen is also called the Kempen Plateau. It consists of many coniferous forests and heathland, but also deciduous forests, inland dunes and mining mountains can be found there.
The area is rich in water: fens, streams, ponds and gravel ponds are no exception. All these different biotopes give many different and rare plants the opportunity to take root. Juniper, common sedge, gale, marsh clubmoss and gorse grow among typical heather species such as red heath. Dragonflies float above the water, while the heather blue, the queen's page and the field fritillary butterfly flutter from flower to flower. The natterjack toad splashes in the water, while the smooth snake slithers its way and the viviparous lizard sits comfortably on the sand in the sun. Deer dart shyly between the trees, while the nightjar sings the highest song.
Maasmechelen aan de Maas is known for a very different recreational daytime activity. This border and former mining municipality has Maasmechelen Village as its greatest tourist attraction. Here you can enjoy shopping and buy branded clothing, often at outlet prices. But it is also nice to just have something delicious to eat in Maasmechelen and enjoy people watching.
