A few small hamlets in the Belgian Kempen together form one of the greenest municipalities of Flanders. Discover them with this wonderful nature route!
Green municipalities
Zutendaal is largely located in the Hoge Kempen National Park, Lanaken is located on the southern edge of the Kempen Plateau. Beautiful heathlands, lush forests and marshy lowlands accompany you on your bike ride. Archaeological finds in the area show that this region has been inhabited for a very long time. For example, a Gallo-Roman cemetery has been found in Lanaken. The first mention of the village was already in 810, when it was still called Ludinaca.
Meuse Valley
The beautiful village of Rekem is also centuries old: it was first mentioned in 1140, as Radekeim. The rich history probably has to do with the favourable location on the old Maasloop, the village is located in the Maas valley. Be sure to get off to soak up the atmosphere and view the monuments at your leisure. When you return, spend another night at the starting point, Eurotel Lanaken. There is so much to discover here!
