The castles around the Bolderberg

The Gust Claesheide, which is also located on the Bolderberg, is one of them. In the east-west direction, thetuigenheuvel is still fairly flat, but towards the north, Bolderberg is steep. At the foot of that slope lie the ponds of Terlaemen, which belong to Terlaemen Castle. At the bottom of the steeply sloping hill you will find areas with wet heathland and raised bog. Cotton grass, bog asphodel and bog myrtle grow here and the tree frog lives in the spring water. There is another notable castle in Heusden. This building was originally a large country house and it was first mentioned as the Hof van Boeckt in 1385. In 1603, the name Milandt first appeared and that name was corrupted to the current Meylandt. In 1715, the Theux family acquired the house. One of the first Belgian prime ministers was the owner of the building. Berthélémy de Theux de Meylandt renovated the luxurious country house in 1842 and in 1907 Count Albert de Theux de Meylandt gave the castle its current neo-classical appearance. The coach house was also built in that year. In 1959, more than two centuries after the Theux family became the owners of Meylandt Castle, they relinquished ownership and the municipality of Heusden bought the magnificent building. Around the castle you will find a public park with fish ponds. The statue in the park is Barthélémy de Theux. It was placed there in 1994.
