WML - Maas

The Maas is a source of Limburg drinking water. This source does require additional purification. More than the naturally cleaner groundwater. Every year, 17 billion liters of water are purified here, intended for (part of) the municipalities of Beesel, Horst aan de Maas, Leudal, Maasgouw, Nederweert, Peel en Maas, Roerdalen, Roermond, Venlo and Venray.

The route passes the intake structure for Maaswater. Here WML checks the quality of the water using freshwater mussels and water fleas. If there is something wrong with the Maas water, WML will stop taking in Maas water for the De Lange Vlieter water basin further away.

Enjoy but handle the environment with care! That means:

• stay on roads and paths;
• do not damage plants;
• take rubbish with you;
• keep the dog on a leash and pick up the poop.
