The Maas is a source of Limburg's drinking water. This source does require additional purification. More than the naturally cleaner groundwater. Every year, 17 billion liters of water are purified here that are intended for (part of) the municipalities of Beesel, Horst aan de Maas, Leudal, Maasgouw, Nederweert, Peel en Maas, Roerdalen, Roermond, Venlo and Venray.
The route passes the inlet for Maaswater. Here WML checks the quality of the water using freshwater mussels and daphnia. If there is something wrong with the Maas water, WML will stop taking in Maas water for the De Lange Vlieter water basin further away.
