Coal. Steam. Light cycle route
Journey into the history of Central German industrial culture
The coals. steam. light cycle route connects Lutherstadt Wittenberg with the new lake district of Leipzig for about 160 kilometers. A partial route starts in Bitterfeld-Wolfen. There are tangible milestones in industrial history along the route, such as the Zschornewitz power plant or the mining technology park. If you want to stay in the region a bit longer, you can go around the mining lakes, this round almost doubles the route.
The coal steam light cycle route is very varied and consists mainly of asphalted cycle paths. On separate short sections of the route, the journey also leads on natural paths and sandy paths.
The cycle route runs from Bitterfeld-Wolfen, along the shores of Lake Neuhaus, to Delitzsch. Past the Werbeliner See and Schladitzer See, the route continues to Hayna, where there is a connection to the Äuterer-Grüner-Ring cycle route. The route goes towards Leipzig. Here you can switch to the Parthe-Mulde cycle route and the Elster and Pleisser cycle paths. The cycle path eventually leads to Markkleeberg, where there is a connection to the Neuseenland cycle route.
You can see further highlights on the way to Groitzsch. Past the mining technology park, the route leads to the Lippendorf power station with its information center. Those interested can see what an active opencast mine looks like on the opencast mine viewing platform. The tour ends at the Großstolpener See in Groitzsch and offers connections to the Neuseenland cycle route.
