Description

Mobility scooter route'Bunde, Maasvallei, Geulle a/d Maas\\\' (SW-Limburg, NL)

Basic distance 21.5 km. Also: 14 km, 14.3 km and up to 45 km. See'shortening\\' 1 and 2 and'expansion\\'.

Possible starting points
1) Meerstraat 46, Bunde (coordinates 50.902026, 5.724866). From Maastricht this is 10 km; from Sittard 20 km. From the A2, exit 51, this is 2.3 km,
Node 14 with a node map is also located on this three-fork.
The car park appears to be private property, yet it is public.
You enter the route by cycling sharply LA in a northerly direction, ascending slightly to a bridge. This is dir. 08. After the bridge you do not go sharp LA with the junction sign, but straight ahead across the road for cars. This is along the Juliana Canal.

2) Kerkplein 5a, Geulle aan de Maas (WP2) (coordinates 50.927513, 5.73949). From Maastricht this is 13 km; from Sittard 7 km. From the A2, exit 50 Geulle, this is 4.5 km.
This parking is located at the church. Here is also junction 17 with a junction map. There is a parking space for the disabled. Those who start from this point will also pass here during the tour. It is located approximately in the middle of the route.
The place name Geulle can cause confusion. The village consists of three scattered village centres: Geulle-Boven (on the upper edge of the Maas valley), Geulle-Beneden (east side of Juliana Canal) and Geulle aan de Maas (west side of Juliana Canal, between Maas and the canal).
Another parking lot, unpaved, is located on the north side of the village, towards 16.
You get on the route by cycling to junction 16 (southbound) with the church on your left.

Characteristics
The route is on quiet back roads. The road surface is asphalt. Occasionally there is a short steep slope. A few times there is a gradual climb due to a bridge.
For the main part, the middle part, the route there and back is the same.

Note 1
In Meers, the way back from the extreme northern point is not the same as the way there because of two problematic short slopes.
Note 2
On the way there you should not take the cycle paths before and after junction 45, but keep following the asphalt road. This avoids a difficult crossing, and a steep climb and descent. On the way back (after Meers) you just have to avoid the bike path the first time. This is indicated in the route indication.

Description from Bunde
From Bunde you soon cross the Juliana Canal and you enter the narrow area between this canal and the Maas. Cargo shipping can be seen on the Juliana Canal on working days. You then briefly go through Geulle aan de Maas past the striking church and the former town hall from 1865 next to it. After this you cycle to the extreme north side of Meers (turning point).
You sometimes cycle close to the Maas. Belgium is on the other side.
Shortening You could shorten in the middle section, which is the same back and forth. This lies between Geulle a/d Maas (junction 17) and before Meers (after 45 dir. 27). Reversing with a hand bike on narrow roads is problematic. That is why only two places are eligible in this central part: a) in Geulle a/d Maas near the church; b) at junction 45, where there is a bridge over the Juliana Canal in the direction of Elsloo.

Shortening 1 14.3 km (21.5 min 7.2)
(if you want even shorter, turn around at church Geulle)
From Bunde
In the basic route (from Bunde) replace' 45 - di 27' through' end' by
- 45: turn around at bridge
- 17-16-15-14: end

Shortening 2 14 km (21.5 minus 7.5)
(You will pass by you once in between
starting point. Do you want even shorter,
then you end up at your starting point)
From Geulle a/d Maas
In the basic route (from Geulle) replace' 45 - dir 27' through' end' by
- 45: turn around at bridge
- 17 - ri 16 - end

Extension up to 45 km (21.5 + max. 23.5)
You can extend the route by cycling at Meers (northern end) to 27 and beyond. You are then on the hand bike route'Grevenbicht, Maasvallei, Meers\\'. This is a back and forth route. So you can determine the distance of your extension yourself.
A possible Geulle terminus is included in the expansion.
From Bunde or from Geulle
In the basic route replace' after 3.5 km four-fork, row of houses' up to and including' end' by
- 27 - ri 19
- after 3 km: in Obbicht at 150 m after T-junction:
--- 1st road RT (Harkhovenstraat)
- after 800 m, four-fork: LA (Heuvelsweg)
- after 600 m: RT onto the dike path
- 19 (Grevenbicht): turn around
--- and the same way back; Tue:
- dir. 27 - after 800 m: LA
--- (so leave the narrowed dike path)
- after 600 m, four-fork: RT
- after 800 meters at T-junction LA
- 27 - dir 45
- after 1.4 km; tue in Urmond, crossroads
--- RA dir. 45 (button sign hanging inconspicuously left);
--- so not'P-terpkerk\\'
- after 5 km, at the beginning of Meers (Veldschuur),
--- four-fork, row of houses:
--- not sign RA 45,
--- but RD Lindendriesstraat
- (after 600 m LA/RA and RD; di dir. 45)
- after about 500 m (Tues after Meers):
--- not LA bike path up,
--- but normal road RD
- 45-17- (possibly end point Geulle)
- 16-15-14: end

Safety
Occasionally you have to go over a dike with a steep slope. Make sure you have enough speed beforehand. You should also not drive this route on a wet road surface.

MANUAL
Routes especially for mobility scooters
Because not all road situations are suitable for mobility scooters, special routes are required, including special route information. At the same time, the special nature of these routes is the reason that it is sometimes necessary to deviate from the junctions.
In addition to the basic distance, most routes have one or more short cuts. A scooter user can choose the distance that his or her means of transport can handle.
The route information is next to the map under the heading'Description\\' (so not'Directions\\\'). Click'show more\\' and everything will appear.
The routes are the same as hand bike routes (\\'handbiken.nl/routes\\'). This is because handbicycles are in roughly the same conditions as scooters on the road. However, hand bike routes that (partly) go over narrow cycle paths have been omitted from the mobility scooter routes.

Route information
The route information is located next to the map under the heading'Description\\\' (so not under'Directions\\\'). Click'show more\\' and everything will appear. The core of this route information is the'Route designation\\'. This is exactly how you should drive.
If you are using a GPS device (e.g. Garmin), download the GPX file to your device. You will then be guided over the roads of the route on the screen of your device. However, this screen only shows the basic route. If you drive a shortening or an extension, you must use the route information for the journey.
When using a navigation device, it is important to read the route indication along the way because of special road situations.
If you do not use a GPS device, you can download the route to your smartphone via the'route.nl\\\' app. Enter the route number in the'route.nl\\\' search box. Download the offline version. With this version you can switch off your (expensive) mobile data while on the road and still follow the route information. You can find this information on your smartphone at the bottom.
If you don't use a smartphone for your route information, you can at least print  the part'Route indication\\\' or the part'Shortening\\\' or'Extension\\\'. If you want to edit the layout before printing, copy what you want to print. You paste this into a Word document and edit it the way you want it for the road. Then comes printing. You can then attach the paper to your scooter
Abbreviations in the route designation include: ri = direction; hw = main road; knp = node; di = this is.

Requirements that the routes meet
no bumpy or difficult road surface, unless extremely short;
no ramps or slopes that are too steep;
no difficult or dangerous crossing points, except once in the expansion;
description of suitable parking space(s) for the start;
indications of special situations;
usually a basic distance of 25 to 35 km, with almost always one or more shortenings and extensions
