Pingjum Golden Necklace

At the end of the eleventh century, residents around Pingjum built a remarkable ring dike: the Pingjumer Gulden Halsband. This dike would protect Pingjum and its surrounding agricultural areas from the water for centuries. Even during the great flood of 1825, the area enclosed by the Pingjumer Gulden Halsband remained dry.
At the end of the nineteenth century, the States of Friesland decided to remove the ring dike as a sea wall. Inland dikes became less important and from now on the focus was on sea dikes. Large parts of the Pingjumer Halsband are still clearly recognizable as green dikes in the landscape.
