Description

At the end of the eleventh century, residents built a remarkable ring dike around Pingjum: the Pingjumer Gulden Halsband. This dike would protect Pingjum and its surrounding agricultural areas against the water for centuries. Even during the great flood of 1825, the area enclosed by the Pingjumer Gulden Halsband remained dry.
At the end of the nineteenth century, the States of Friesland decided to remove the ring dike as a sea wall. Inner dykes became less important and the focus was now on sea dykes. Large parts of the Pingjumer Halsband are still recognizable as green dikes in the landscape.
Arable farming, pasture or grassland
