Description

Adventurous cyclists cross the border to cycle on a route on German territory. When you cross the border at Oldenzaal and go to In Lower Saxony, you can cycle a nice route through an agricultural landscape and nice places. Lower Saxony It is first mentioned around the twelfth century. The villagers then lived mainly from cattle breeding and agriculture. The legacy of that history can still be seen today: many sheep, poultry and pig farms can be found in the municipality. In 1865 the town started to grow considerably due to the construction of the Almelo - Salzbergen railway line, which became of great importance for the development of the textile industry in Twente, just across the German-Dutch border. Near Salzbergen you will find the village of Emsbüren. The real, old-fashioned village character can still be found here and Emsbüren has a small population density with only 70 inhabitants per square kilometer. When you get the chance, go to the village around Easter. In Emsbüren, a beautiful Easter procession takes place on Easter Sunday around 4 p.m. from the nearby Nattenberg. People leave from here singing to the village, to pray at the wall of the cemetery. Then you walk around the Andreas church. The tour also leads you through Schuttorf. This place was hit by an aerial bomb in 1945 and completely burned out. Unfortunately, the city archives of the municipality were also lost, so not much is known about the history of the city. Presumably the village was first mentioned in 1154 as curtis Schutthorp. From 1295 the village received city rights and grew into the city as it is known today. Nevertheless, the village character has been well preserved in this city and, despite the fire, many authentic, old buildings can still be found.
