Round Devilland

Beautiful views over water alternate with the interior of Schouwen-Duiveland. With a bit of luck you will see a bat, and you will probably encounter one or more shetland ponies. An absolute must for animal lovers, but also those interested in cultural history will be amazed during this cycling tour. With various windmills, a beautiful estate and a visit to the Watersnoodmuseum, this tour of Duiveland is definitely a fun day's activity. When you have parked your car in the free parking lot on the dike, you set course for Oosterland. Via Ouwerkerk and Bruinisse you can easily reach Oosterstein Castle. The oldest mention of this castle south of Ouwerkerk dates from 1410. A drawing by Aart Schouwman from 1729 already depicts the castle as a ruin, and in 1958, during excavations, the outer bailey and main bailey of the"House to Oostersteyn\\\". The castle consisted of a house dating from the mid-fourteenth century, around which a new sixteenth-century house has been built. The main building had outer walls almost a meter thick and was adorned by a beautiful corner tower. If you want to know more about one of the most important disasters in Dutch history, you cannot avoid a visit to the Watersnoodmuseum (Museum Floods 1953). The museum highlights the flood disaster from different themes: the facts, the emotions that the disaster aroused, the reconstruction and the future. Rotating exhibitions, treasure hunts and other fun activities are also organized.
