Get a breath of fresh air around Grevelingen

The starting point of the route is at Schouwen-Duivenland. From here you cycle directly to Goeree-Overflakkee in South Holland. This island used to consist of several small islands. Man fought against the water and gradually more and more land was conquered from the sea. The polders in Goeree-Overflakkee were constructed in turn from the twelfth century. So it eventually became one big island. The first polder to be reclaimed was Oudeland van Diepenhorst. Both islands have been safer since the construction of the Delta Works. Before that, the islands were regularly hit by floods. For example, 22 people drowned during the Storm Flood of 1682 and the Flood of 1953 claimed almost five hundred lives. The historical connection with the water is typical of this area.
