Lochristi, Beervelde, Overmere

Lochristi is a place in beautiful East Flanders and best known for its flowers. Beautiful flowers bloom luxuriantly: especially azaleas and begonias you see a lot. Since 1972, the Lodejo festivities have been held annually in the town and from 1950 to 1980 the famous begonia festival was organized there. Since 2008 there is a weekly market in the center where you can buy all kinds of fresh local products. You will find Beervelde a little east of Lochristi. This small village has a beautiful castle garden, designed in 1873. The garden is landscaped in English landscape style and in May you will also find beautiful extensive azalea fields here. The village also has one of the oldest discotheques in Belgium: Het Feestpaleis discotheque in the center has existed since 1926. The village of Overmere is known for the biennial Festivaria festival, which takes place on the Donkmeer. It is a popular festival visited by people from home and abroad. Members of the Belgian Royal family are also normally present at Festivaria. The Donkmeer is a great setting: it is one of the largest lakes in Flanders and is itself a tourist attraction. About thirty hectares of the area is a protected nature reserve and includes an animal park and a historic duck decoy. The route starts and ends at Profile Dierickx.
