Lochristi, Beervelde, Overmere

Lochristi is a town in beautiful East Flanders, especially known for its flowers. Beautiful flowers bloom abundantly there: azaleas and begonias are particularly common. Since 1972, the Lodejofeesten have been held annually in the town, and from 1950 to 1980, the famous begonia festival was also held there. Since 2008, there has been a weekly market in the town center where you can buy all kinds of fresh regional produce. A little east of Lochristi, you'll find Beervelde. This small village boasts a beautiful castle garden, designed in 1873. The garden is laid out in the English landscape style, and in May, you'll find magnificent, expansive azalea fields. The village also boasts one of the oldest nightclubs in Belgium: Het Feestpaleis, located in the town center, has been around since 1926. The village of Overmere is known for its biennial Festivaria festival, which takes place at Donkmeer lake. It's a popular festival attended by people from Belgium and abroad. Members of the Belgian Royal Family are also usually present at Festivaria. Donkmeer Lake is a magnificent setting: it's one of the largest lakes in Flanders and a tourist attraction in itself. Approximately thirty hectares of the area is a protected nature reserve, and it includes a zoo and a historic duck decoy. The route starts and ends at Profile Dierickx.
