Description

Grolloo, Schoonloo and Hooghalen are beautiful wooded areas in Drenthe. Recreation and nature go hand in hand here and the forests are also used for timber harvesting. Sometimes the trees suddenly part and you unexpectedly encounter an open field or a mysterious lake. The deeper you penetrate into the heart of the sea of trees, the quieter it becomes. Find your way among the spruce and larch trees of the Hooghalen forestry, which is best known for the former Westerbork camp, which is located deep in the forest. The pearl of this area is an old drifting sand area called the Heuvingerzand. Centuries-old oaks and Scots pines surround the sand, making it difficult to remove. Animals that hide in the forests of Grolloo, Schoonloo and Hooghalen are badgers, which look for their food in wet stream valleys, but build their castles in dry places. Badgers are common in Drenthe, but also keep your eyes open for more special animals.
A pair of rough-legged owls are hiding in the woods of Schoonloo. What makes this pair extra special is that they also breed there. They like to nest in hollow trees. More than 800 bearded bats are the new residents of Westerbork camp. This largest bat colony in the Netherlands hibernates in the camp's former potato cellar. And on the Hingsteveen you can see the peat hay creature fluttering. This butterfly can only be seen three weeks a year and this raised bog area is one of the last places in the Netherlands where the animal can be admired. Of course you won't see the animal in winter. Then the peat is the domain of the gray shrike.

Mill of Grolloo

The paaltjasker is located in the Grollooërveen and can be seen from afar. The tjasker was built as early as 1930, but it was only given its current purpose in 1986. The mill has no other function than that of a tourist attraction. You can also approach it within a few meters, if you are willing to push your way through the tough vegetation. The Schoonoord mill (body/remains) was built in 1903, with the octagon of a mill from Groningen. The windmill was transferred from Middelstum to further perform its function: striking oil. After a series of repairs, the mill was dismantled in 1978 and came to a standstill. At that time the interior had already been removed. Almost next to the mill you can visit the Ellert and Brammert Open Air Museum. Drenthe still exudes the atmosphere of the past and this open-air museum really lets you take a step back in time. Here you can see how people lived in the past: the collection includes a sod hut, a toll house, a school, a Saxon farm and a prison.
