The touristic Wadden island of Texel is very versatile. Whether you want to get a breath of fresh air on the beach or enjoy a great diversity of nature; you will find it all on Texel. A large part of Texel consists of a nature reserve with special plants and animals and National Park Duinen van Texel, among other things, shows you a special nature that is unique in the Netherlands and even for Europe. In total, the area, which was designated a National Park in 2002, is about 43 square kilometers and covers the dune areas on the entire west side of the island. The beaches in the south and in the northern tip of the island also belong to the Duinen van Texel National Park. One of the beautiful sub-areas you will explore is De Slufter. This wide dune valley is in open connection with the North Sea. The seawater runs through creeks into the Slufter when the tide comes in. Due to the salty seawater, it is logical that many salt-loving plants grow here. Sea lavender turns the plain purple in June and the samphire blooms deep red in October. Further to the northwest, a sweet, wet valley has emerged where orchids grow in abundance.
At the northernmost point of Texel you will see Lighthouse Eierland, which is named after the former island of Eierland. The construction of the red tower on a twenty-meter high dune began in 1863. The lighthouse was lit a year later and is still in use. It burned on petroleum until 1910, when it switched to pharoline and finally the tower was connected to the electricity grid. The lighthouse can be climbed up to the sixth floor, but the light house and the former lighthouse keeper's office are not accessible. You can see into the office through the window from the balcony. When you arrive in Oosterend you will see another historic building. In 1878, a mill was placed in the northern polder of Oosterend, called Het Noorden, to drain the northeastern areas of Texel. In 1928, the mill was streamlined and three screw pumps for better operation. The octagonal upper porter went out of business around 1964 and became the property of the De Hollandse Molen foundation in 1970. He has restored the mill and made it ready to grind again, so that it can now be put into operation on a voluntary basis. It then grinds the water around in a circuit.

The northern tip of Texel used to be a separate island: Eierland. The fire then takes its name from it. From the tower, due to the north, nothing but the sea stretches all the way to the North Pole.

The most famous windmill type in the Netherlands. Windmills were not only used to produce grain flour, but also to reclaim polder areas. Natural energy. The most famous windmills can be found in Kinderdijk, really set up as a polder model. A must see!
