Round Texel, from De Koog

The dune area of Texel is a beautiful nature reserve with dunes, forests, heaths, salt marshes and an extensive beach plain. The expanse of sea and beach, the beautiful forests and the large dune landscape make the National Park Dunes of Texel a wonderful area to visit. The nature reserve is 43 square kilometers in size and forms a sea of dunes as far as you can see over the entire west side of Texel. Due to its tranquility and space, Texel is a paradise for many animal species: the common seal and the gray seal have a great time along the coastline, rabbits and hares hop in the dunes where ermines hunt and if you are lucky, see you can see a white-beaked dolphin swimming in the sea and it is an El Dorado for many different species of birds, such as spoonbills and waders. On the east side of our route, where the tour starts in De Koog near the Koogerveld, you will find yourself on the border of dunes and farmland. Several Lancaster bombers crashed on Texel. The tour leads you past two monuments at junctions 15 and 11, each of which commemorates an aircraft and bears the same name: Lancaster Bomber Crashed Memorial. The memorials consists of a stone and a plaque. In the center of Den Burg you will also come to a nice museum Oudheidkamer. It is located in a beautiful house from 1599, where you can learn a little more about the consumer items from the previous centuries. Behind the museum is also a small herb garden that you can stroll through. After the museum you will pass the Texel War Memorial.
