Description

Your cycling route starts in the Alblasserbos, a rare forest in this vast region. You cycle through the vast polders of the Alblasserwaard. This peat meadow area consists mainly of meadows on peat soil and is crossed by numerous ditches. You cycle along the water through Sliedrecht and Alblasserdam, where you can stop for a cup of coffee or a tasty lunch at Het Wapen van Alblasserdam. In Kinderdijk, where the Noord and Lek rivers meet, sixteen polder windmills were built in 1738 to protect the village against the water. The second mill on the west side of the Middelkade can be visited. The mills are on the UNESCO World Heritage List, not only because of the mills themselves, but also because all the technology that has been used for water management since the Middle Ages can be seen here.
