Description

Explore the Sonnisheide, an area between Helchteren and Opglabbeek and an area with the most important biodiversity in Flanders. You will find extensive heathland and drifting sand areas, but also large alder swamp forests, fens and heathland grasslands. The stream valleys and surrounding plateaus have remained intact and the area is home to many birds that breed on the heathland and in the marshes, such as the golden plover and the dune pipit.
Migratory birds also know how to find the Kattenven and the Biezenven; the crane and the hen harrier use the area as a resting place. However, the area is becoming overgrown with grass, which has made it more difficult for the short-eared owl and the black grouse, but they still show themselves occasionally. In the marshes you will find the bittern, the spotted crake, the corncrake and the red-backed shrike, while the black woodpecker, the nightjar and the honey buzzard build their nests in the trees of the forests.
