Round Dike Wife in the Gendtse Waard

This walking route starts at Camping Waalstrand. You walk through the Gendtse Waard, part of the Gendtse Polder. The part without a dike is the waard, where river water can flow in and out freely. Around the Vossegat, a silting up sand extraction pond, a special area is created with undulating sand and gravel banks, overgrown with willows and black poplars. A landmark not to be missed during the route is the'Dijkwijf\\\', a statue of a woman on a mound. It can be seen from a great distance. A'Dijk van een Wijf\\\' is made of brick and is 3 meters high. Brick is a real river product. For the masonry, use was made of bricks from surrounding brick factories, misfires and boulders from the immediate vicinity. These fragments form the skirts of the'Dijkwijf\\\'.
