Hoorn, Zuidermeer and Wognum

Hoorn has a rich history. From 1356 onwards, the city itself was able to draw up and enforce legal rules and collect taxes. The port of Hoorn soon overtook all other ports in the area except that of Amsterdam. This economic growth continued for a long time, but there was a setback in the eighteenth century. Part of the harbor was silted up and French troops were stationed there. In the nineteenth century the city again experienced strong economic growth. During that time, Hoorn grew into the vibrant city it is today. During your bike ride you will come across a beautiful windmill near Wognum, which is called the Mill of Kerkepolder. It is a see-saw mill that stands out sharply against the horizon in the flat polder. The wood-covered mill drained the approximately 17 hectare Kerkepolder. Since 1948, when the excess water in the polder could be drained to the Leekerlanden via a culvert under the summer dike. Although the mill is still capable of grinding, it is no longer used in 2013. The cycle tour starts and ends in the historic harbor of Hoorn at Hotel De Magneet, which is located on the quay, close to the Zuiderzee.
