Tour of Westerpark and Balijbos

In the Balijbos you will see many beeches, ash trees and alders. In part of this area, nature is allowed to take its own course. It is part of the Groen-Blauw Slinger, which connects the green areas in the region. Take a look at Stadsboerderij de Balijhoeve, a petting zoo intended to familiarize city children with the animals of the countryside. In addition to the petting zoo, there is also a play forest. Then you walk further to the Westerpark, a recreation area that was created around 1980. Peat extraction started here in the 14th century, and in 1668 the draining began: mills ground the Driemanspolder dry. You will now find a mix of water features, forest and grasslands here.
