Sallandse Heuvelrug route

Enjoy the foreign-looking views, vast moors, varied forests and a passing herd of Scottish Highlanders? This is possible while cycling this route through the beautiful National Park De Sallandse Heuvelrug. This National Park is also the last place in the Netherlands where the black grouse lives. From the center of Nijverdal you cycle via the Goudzoekerspad towards the National Park De Sallandse Heuvelrug. You cycle past Information Barn de Pas van Natuurmonumenten. This is an unmanned information shed. Here, information is provided about the sites of Natuurmonumenten on the Sallandse Heuvelrug by means of an exhibition. De Pas is open all day during excursions, weekends and holidays. Via Landgoed De Sprengenberg you come to the Palthetoren, built in 1903 by mr. AAW van Wulfften Palthe. Unfortunately, the Palthetoren is not open to the public. In the nature reserve around the Palthetoren, Scottish Highlanders have been deployed since 1980 to graze forest, heathland and grassland. Between nodes 69 and 70 you can deviate slightly from the route and visit the impressive Canadian War Cemetery. This Canadian War Cemetery forms one of the most impressive memories of the 2nd World War in this area. Every year on May 4, Remembrance Day, a memorial service is held at the Canadian War Cemetery. The Holten children play a central role in this. Via the east side of the National Park you will return to Nijverdal, a place that was created by the textile industry and where there are now many shops and terraces to enjoy!
