This route takes you from Saint-Mard to Torgny, the southernmost village in Belgium. Torgny is included in the list of the most beautiful villages in Wallonia, so it is definitely worth a visit. Take a bike ride through the beautiful surroundings and spend some extra time in Torgny.
Historic Torgny
The town of Torgny has its own microclimate thanks to its south-facing location. In keeping with this southern appearance, you will also find many tasty wines here. You will also find rare houses with hollow tile roofs here. More than 50 houses in Torgny date back to the 18th and 19th centuries, but Torgny's history goes back further. Excavations have unearthed a Roman villa and a Frankish cemetery from the 6th and 7th centuries. The fine jewels from these Merovingian tombs are currently on display at the Musée Gaumais in Virton.
Castles everywhere you go
There are also many castles to admire here in the region. In a radius of 30 km around Virton, the Gaume counts 100 castles and 150 religious monuments that are worth a detour. The castle of Latour, for example, is located in a strategic location, which already served as a military post in Roman times.
Latour Castle
The château de Latour was owned by the local lords until the mid-15th century, after which it changed hands several times. In 1433 the buildings were destroyed by the people of Liège and after rebuilding it was stormed again by the troops of the Duke of Orléans in 1542. The castle was later partially restored.
