In the vicinity of Waremme and Kemexhe you can make wonderful cycling trips through a gently sloping landscape full of orchards and meadows. Waremme is considered the capital of the Haspengouw region. This city developed from the 11th century around the castle that stood here. In the 14th and 15th centuries the city became increasingly important.
Castle Longchamps
The starting point of this cycling tour is between Kemexhe and Freloux. From here you set course for Waremme. Just outside the city gates of Waremme you will find the Longchamps castle from the 19th century. The castle is located in one of the oldest farmlands in Europe. In Hainaut, grain is mainly grown on the fields. The villages in this area are built around the church and are surrounded by fields and country roads.
Villages full of sights
The many square farmhouses you will find here are also typical for the region. In Donceel, for example, you will find many of those beautiful farms. Next to Donceel is the town of Haneffe. The view in this village is determined by a fortified house that, together with the church, the presbytery and some other buildings, was part of the commandery of the Knights Templar. In short, there is plenty to see in the villages you cycle through on this route.
