Description

Your walk starts with a cup of coffee or an overnight stay at Camping De La Rue Koffie & Zo. Then you put on your walking shoes. At junction 26 you pass Natuurpoort Fort Altena. It was built in 1847 and was part of the New Dutch Waterline. This defense line was constructed to protect the rich west of the Netherlands against foreign armies. A mile-wide strip of land spanning about 85 kilometers could be flooded, thanks to an ingenious system of locks and canals. Defenses closed weak spots in the line. For example, Fort Altena had to close the Breda-Gorinchem road and the Uppelse Dijk. You continue walking, past sweeping views of the polder landscape and many waterways. You will also see a polder mill from around 1700: the Zandwijkse Molen.
