Do you want to enjoy the green surroundings of the Ardennes, but are you dreading all the hills in this area? Then follow this route over an almost flat towpath and discover the beautiful city of Namur and the forests in the vicinity of Namur.
Cycling along the Maas
At the beginning of the route you make a descent to end up at the Meuse. Here, cycle through a green area full of flowering plants and animals that live on the banks of the river. You can also admire boats passing by on the Maas, but there is more than that. Besides the Maas you will also find numerous small villages with cozy cafes where you can settle down for a beer from Jupiler or another drink. As you approach Namur, the area gradually becomes more urbanized. Namur is the capital of Wallonia and the Walloon parliament has its seat here.
Old streets in Namur
In the middle of the old town of Namur you will find the Marché-aux-Légumes. Stroll through the small streets with special shops, cafes and restaurants and settle down for a well-deserved snack and a drink. The huge citadel in Namur was built in 1815 by a Dutch stadtholder.
Cities along the Meuse
Something that Namur has in common with other large cities along the Meuse is the architectural style. All the cities here are built in the style of the Renaissance. Namur, Liège, Dinant, Huy and Maastricht also belong in this list. It is striking that the distance between the cities is 35 kilometers each time, exactly the distance you could cover in a day on horseback to be inside the city gates before dark.
