This route takes you through the lovely Land of Villers. Get on your bike and discover a rolling landscape with small villages where time has stood still, old farms surrounded by vast fields, dense forests and historical heritage such as chapels and abbeys.
On to Villers-la-Ville
The starting point of this route is at Genappe. From here you cycle through Villers-la-Ville, a town in the middle of fields and forests. The Thyle and Gentissart have meandered their way through the silty soil here. The surrounding villages bear names such as Marbais, Mellery, Sart-Dames-Avelines, Tilly, Villers and they are all equally charming. The most important asset of Villers-la-Ville is the Cistercian abbey. In the middle of the greenery, the ruins of Villers Abbey rise. The abbey was founded in 1146.
One of the oldest Gothic buildings in Belgium
Even though the abbey has fallen into ruins, you can still imagine that a large community was based here. The abbey experienced its greatest prosperity in the 13th century, when up to 100 monks and 300 lay brothers lived here. The abbey church is still the most impressive structure of the entire ruin. It is one of the first Gothic buildings in Belgium.
