With this route you will discover a combination of the main assets of Hainaut: water and heritage. You cycle along the impressive Canal du Center with its hydraulic lifts, which are recognized as World Heritage by UNESCO.
Centuries-old hydraulic ship lifts
Ghislage is the starting point of this route and from here you cycle along the course of the Center Canal. The lifts in this canal were built to bridge a height difference of 17 meters. The four hydraulic boat lifts of the Historic Center Canal are industrial monuments and provide a remarkably well-preserved and complete example of a late 19th century industrial landscape. Of the eight hydraulic waterworks built at the time, the four lifts of the Historic Center Canal are the only ones in the world that still function. The oldest structure (1888) is Engineer Clark's machine, better known as No. 1 Hydraulic Boat Lift.
The Strépy-Thieu cable car
This route also takes you to the Strépy-Thieu Cable Lift, a giant boat lift 150 meters high. This colossus of concrete moves the boats powerfully but quietly and that is very special to see. It is the highest ship lift in the world and therefore a showcase for the know-how of Belgian engineering of the 20th and 21st century.
