Description

This route takes you through the Parc naturel du Pays des Collines, a hilly and mysterious area rich in legends and folkloric traditions. The idyllic landscape is characterized by pollard willows, small woods, windmills and winding paths. The hilltops are mostly forested with stream valleys in between that consist of arable land and meadows. These fields are lined with hedges and pollard willows - a typical bocage landscape that is characteristic of this region.

Discover the Dender region
Papignies is the start and end point of this route. From here you cycle past farms and chapels scattered on the hills between villages and small hamlets. You conclude your route with the discovery of a part of one of those wetland areas that Hainaut is known for: the Dender region. In Lessines you cross the Dender, called Dendre in French. Here you will come across many boats in the summer, which you can admire while cycling.

Ancient monuments
In Lessines, it is worth taking a look at the Hôpital Notre-Dame à la Rose, an institution founded in 1242 by the French princess Alix de Rosoit as a shelter for the poor and sick. Today, the monastic buildings from the 16th to 18th centuries serve as a museum.

Debating land
The region around Ellezelles was a constant point of contention between Flanders and Hainaut from the thirteenth century. That is why the region was often referred to as the land of debates (terre des debates). Vloesberg was initially strongly influenced by Tournai and Picardy was spoken, just like in Tournai. When the language border was established in 1962, only the hamlet of D\\\'Hoppe (La Houppe) in the municipality of Vloesberg was Dutch-speaking.
