Description
Around Blaton you can enjoy a green environment full of hills, forests, nature parks and gardens. You will also find rivers that make their way through the landscape and lakes. A nice varied area in short for a bike ride near the border with France. Be sure to make some time to get acquainted with the typical regional products from this region. The forest of Stambruges
The route takes you through the forest of Stambruges, among other things. It is not difficult to become enchanted by this lovely green place. You will find beech, oak, coniferous and pine here, but also dry and peaty heaths, peat pits and a young birch forest. In the middle of the forest is the Mer de Sable. This was once a large pond, but now it has completely silted up into a true'sand sea\\\'.
Cycling along the canal
Another special spot along the route is Blaton, where two canals cross. The Canal Nimy-Blaton-Péronnes connects Nimy with Péronnes on the Scheldt. Together with the Center Canal and the Charleroi-Brussels Canal, it forms the connection between the Scheldt and Meuse basins. The canal is the successor of the old Pommeroeul-Antoing Canal.
The Nimy-Blaton-Péronnes Canal
The Canal Nimy-Blaton-Péronnes runs at the same level for almost its entire length. The height difference of 18.10 m is only overcome by 2 locks just before the mouth in the Scheldt. At Blaton, just before the branch of the Blaton-Ath Canal, a flood lock was built that can close the canal in the event of a dike breach so that the canal does not empty completely.
