The green lungs of Genk

On the road through the greenery of De Hoge Kempen National Park. Although: in the summer it turns quite purple here! Along the way you will also discover the Royal Domain, a special area in the park.

Royal Domain
The starting point of the route, Opgrimbie, is already at an altitude of about 42 meters. To the west the steep edge rises to over 90 meters, on the Kempen Plateau. Here you will find the Royal Domain with the country residence of King Baudouin I: Villa Fridhem. It is located as an enclave in the Hoge Kempen National Park. A little further on you will pass the beautiful Molenvijver Park with the M Hotel, a nice place to stay the night!

National Park
You continue cycling through the National Park, a beautiful natural backdrop of 5,700 hectares of forest and heathland where many rare and special animals are found. You can spot the queen eagle there and there is a large population of deer. The curlew, woodlark and nightjar can be seen on the heath. This heath, consisting of common heather, heather and red heather, turns beautiful purple in August and September. Hundreds of hectares will be in bloom at the same time!
