Saxon low mountain range full of UNESCO world heritage
Cross the Erzgebirge on the'Sächische Mittelgebirge\\\' cycle route from east to west. Starting point is Schöna on the Elbe at the Elbsandsteingebirge (Sächsische Schweiz National Park). End point is Wildenthal (near Johanngeorgenstadt). The route of almost 250 kilometers offers the cyclist overwhelming nature and great views. An ideal environment for a complete sense of relaxation.
Raw materials, including silver, have traditionally been found in the natural Erzgebirge. In the 19th century many mines became exhausted and the population started looking for new sources of income. Many turned to woodworking and the Erzgebirge developed into a supplier of wooden furniture, toys and Christmas items. The region enjoys fame as'the German Christmas land\\\'.
In this area, the cyclist also encounters sights about the heyday of (silver) mining. More than 400 objects related to mining culture were placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019. The locations include former mines, tools, transport systems and historic towns. The route passes through Annaberg-Buchholz and Marienberg, places that thrived on mining. One of the UNESCO objects is the mintmaster's building in Annaberg. It now houses the Wilder Mann hotel; you can spend the night here in world heritage.
The Erzgebirge is a low mountain range with generally a fairly gradual drop in height. Most height differences in this cycle route are around 400 meters. Suitable for experienced cyclists. The route can be extended towards the Vogtland, indicated as'Radfernweg I-6\\\'.
Route length: 244 km
