Alde Feanen and Burgum from Leeuwarden

Leeuwarden is a beautiful city with the St. Boniface Church by the famous neo-Gothic architect Cuypers. Also visit the Fryslân Nature Museum, with the skeleton of a gigantic blue whale. Then you make a big circuit around the Wijde Ee (or Wide Ie) near Bergum. It is connected to other canals and lakes in the area and this passage ensured that nearby Bergum or Burgum could develop its wealth. The Alde Feanen is a unique nature reserve: in this low peat swamp of almost 4,000 hectares you will find all stages of a swamp, from wide open water to sheltered forests.
