Description

With this cycle route you make a big round around De Groote Peel National Park, but you also discover other nature reserves in De Peel. National Park De Groote Peel a little further on is a bird-rich nature reserve that consists of swamps, heaths and small pieces of forest. The raised bog, of which the park is a remnant, used to cover some 30,000 hectares. Most of this high moorland disappeared due to peat extraction and the reclamation of agricultural land. At Eethuis en Cafeteria't Veen in Helenaveen you can stop for a cup of coffee on the terrace. Helenaveen is located on the edge of the Deurnsche Peel / Mariapeel. Due to peat extraction, there are peat canals, peat pits and ponds in a vegetated heath area, which attract rare butterflies and dragonflies. Via Griendtsveen you cycle back to Asten.
