Description

With this cycling route you make a grand tour around De Groote Peel National Park, but you also discover other nature reserves in the Peel. De Groote Peel National Park a little further away is a bird-rich nature reserve that consists of swamp, heath and small pieces of forest. The raised peat bog, of which the park is a remnant, used to cover approximately 30,000 hectares. Most of this raised bog area disappeared due to peat extraction and the cultivation of agricultural land. At Eethuis en Cafetaria't Veen in Helenaveen you can stop for a cup of coffee on the terrace. Helenaveen is located on the edge of the Deurnsche Peel / Mariapeel. Due to peat extraction, there are peeling canals, peat pits and water ponds in an overgrown heathland area, which attract rare butterflies and dragonflies. You cycle back to Asten via Griendtsveen.
