Description

With this cycle route you will make a big round around National Park De Groote Peel, but you will also discover other nature reserves in the Peel. National Park De Groote Peel a little further on is a bird-rich nature reserve that consists of marsh, heathland and small areas of forest. In the past, the raised bog, of which the park is a remnant, covered around 30,000 hectares. Most of this raised bog area disappeared due to peat extraction and the development of agricultural land. At Eethuis en Cafetaria't Veen in Helenaveen you can stop for a cup of coffee on the terrace. Helenaveen is located on the edge of the Deurnsche Peel / Mariapeel. Due to the peat extraction, there are peat canals, peat pits and ponds in an overgrown heathland, which attract rare butterflies and dragonflies. Via Griendtsveen you cycle back to Asten.
