Description

Texel is a versatile island that offers something for everyone. A large part of Texel consists of a nature reserve with special plants and animals. Nature that is unique in the Netherlands and even in Europe. You pass through one of the oldest villages on the Dutch Wadden Island: De Koog. It is located almost directly on the North Sea and it will not surprise you that the fishing village has grown into an important seaside resort on Texel. With around 1300 inhabitants, the village can be called small. The largest village on the island is Den Burg and has approximately 7,100 inhabitants; about half of the total number of people who permanently inhabit the island. Archaeological finds prove that the place where Den Burg originated has been inhabited for centuries; it is suspected that the Franks destroyed a Frisian castle on this site in the seventh century. The pattern of the streets in the center is ring-shaped, as fortified towns were designed in the past.
