In Drenthe, as a cyclist, you can indulge in nature, tranquility and the rich cultural history. With this route you will experience all three of these essential Drenthe ingredients. That will be a wonderful day of cycling.
Zuidlaardermeer
The Zuidlaardermeer is a natural widening of the Hunze river. On the banks the reeds wave in the wind, here and there you also see willows and alder groves. It is a nice place to get off and look out over the water or to spot birds. In the Drenthe village of De Groeve you drive past the Boezemvriend, built in 1871, the only large polder mill in Drenthe.
The Drentsche Aa
Via Zuidlaren, a village with seven village greens, you enter the Drentsche Aa National Landscape, the best preserved stream and esdorp landscape in Western Europe. Here you cycle through the Drenthe of the past with Saxon farms around the village green, fields on the rounded ash trees and hay fields in the lower stream valley. An experience in itself, so take your time to look at everything carefully.
