A beautiful round of Drenthe

Zuidlaardermeer
The Zuidlaardermeer is a natural widening of the river Hunze. On the banks the reeds sway in the wind, here and there you can also see willows and alder groves. It is a nice place to step off and look out over the water or to spot birds. In the Drenthe village of De Groeve you drive past the Boezemvriend, built in 1871, the only large polder mill in Drenthe.

The Drenthe Aa
Via Zuidlaren, a village with seven village greens, you enter the Drentsche Aa National Landscape, the best-preserved stream and esdorp landscape in Western Europe. Here you cycle through the Drenthe of the past with Saxon farms around the brink, fields on the convex ash and hay meadows in the lower stream valley. An experience in itself, so take your time to take a good look at everything.
