Description
You start in Beetsterzwaag where you see, feel and experience a rich history. The village used to have a lot of prestige because of the nobility present. The various monumental buildings and gardens that you still find in the Hoofdstraat are silent witnesses of the wealthy noble residents who lived in Beetsterzwaag in the 18th and 19th. Through forest and meadows you reach the village of Smalle Ee, which owes its origins to a Benedictine monastery"\\\'Onser Lyewe Vrouwen Smelgeraconvent\\\'. A double monastery where men and women lived and worked. Smalle Ee is the smallest village in the municipality, but in the past it was the main town and namesake of the grietenij and the later municipality of Smallingerland.
The cycle path from Smalle Ee to De Veenhoop offers a beautiful view over the Noarderkrite and the Bonnebuskepetten. Here the reeds wave in the wind, you cycle past the swampy swamp forest and you hear the song of the many reed birds. The birds are attracted to the quiet peat holes with the surrounding bosomlands. Along this cycle path you will also find an American mill. After De Veenhoop you pass the wetland area of the Kraanlanden nature reserve, which is inhabited by various water birds. Via the hamlets of Warniahuizen and Poppenhuizen you can reach the villages of Terwispel and Lippenhuizen by cycling along the Alddiep and the Nijevaart. The last part goes through forests and heathlands, the old road between Lippenhuizen and Beetsterzwaag.
