Description

After an overnight stay at Camping't Einde, put on your walking shoes. Today you will explore the Leersumse Veld with the Leersumse Plassen. The Leersumse Veld was eroded during the Ice Age by meltwater, when the moraine of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug was formed. Due to deforestation and overgrazing, the area has become an area of drifting sand and heathland in recent centuries, with peat formation in wet places. Around the eighteenth century, the peat was excavated for fuel and the Leersumse Plassen were created. The lakes attract many dragonflies and birds, which you can observe from a bird hide at the third lake. The heath is grazed by a herd of Piedmontese cows. A stately oak-linden avenue and old rhododendrons are a vague reference to the fact that there were once country estates here.
