Crossing borders through mountain country with UNESCO world heritage

The Erzgebirge in Saxony offers no less than 5,000 km of hiking trails. Topper is the Kammweg Erzgebirge-Vogtland. It is one of the'TOP Trails Germany\\\'. Overwhelming nature and great views offer a complete sense of relaxation.
The Kammweg runs from Altenberg to Blankenstein in Thuringia. The highest peak in the route is the Fichtelberg of over 1,200 meters high. Many raw materials were found in the Erzgebirge, including silver. After 1800 the mines became exhausted and the miners had to look for a new livelihood. Many turned to woodworking and the Erzgebirge then developed into a supplier of wooden furniture, toys and Christmas items. The region is known as'the German Christmas land\\\'.
Along the Kammweg there are many sights about the heyday of (silver) mining. More than 400 objects related to mining culture were placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019. The locations include former mines, tools, transportation systems, landscapes to historic centers of towns that thrived on mining: Annaberg-Buchholz, Freiberg and Marienberg. Although the Kammweg is a long-distance trail, many parts are great for a day hike. Dozens of short (circle) walks have been set out to fill a (part of) a day. They can be found on the website of the Kammweg.
