Tour of burial mounds, Balloërveld and Drentsche Aa

In the Drentsche Aa National Landscape, you'll find the typical Drenthe landscape that once stretched throughout Drenthe. Enjoy elevated fields and meadows, pastures in the stream valley, fields on the rounded commons, and Saxon farms around the village green. As you cycle towards Rolde, you'll pass two Bronze Age burial mounds. In the Bronze Age, the dead were often buried in such a mound, just as the dead elsewhere in Drenthe were buried in dolmens. Burial mounds were often used to bury multiple people. These sites were used not only as a final resting place for the dead but also as a place of worship. Today, the burial mounds are protected as historical monuments.
