Tour of burial mounds, Balloërveld and Drentsche Aa

Your route starts at Pannenkoekenboerderij Brinkzicht. In the Drentsche Aa National Landscape you will find the typical Drenthe landscape that could be found throughout Drenthe centuries ago. Enjoy higher fields and meadows, meadows in the stream valley, fields on the rounded ash trees and Saxon farms around the village green. If you cycle towards Rolde you will pass two burial mounds from the Bronze Age. In the Bronze Age, the dead were often buried in such a burial mound, just as the dead were buried in dolmens in other places in Drenthe. Burial mounds were often used to bury several people. These places were used not only as a final resting place for the dead, but also as a place of worship. Nowadays the burial mounds are protected as historical monuments.
