About Wieringen
The former Wadden Island of Wieringen is surrounded by the Wadden Sea, Amstelmeer and the Ijsselmeer. Since the construction of the Afsluitdijk, Wieringen is officially no longer an island. But you still have the island feeling here! Wieringen offers a hilly and characteristic landscape with charming villages such as Den Oever and Hippolytushoef. The rolling landscape was formed in the Ice Age. At various points you have beautiful views of water and land.

Start and end Den Oever
The cycle route starts and ends at the parking lot in the port of Den Oever, a historic fishing port with a still active fishing fleet. The Sea Fresh Fish Market takes place here every Saturday morning, where you can choose fish yourself or eat some fish.

The Wieringer Skuutje WR60 from 1840 is also located in the harbor. It is the oldest sailing fishing ship in the Netherlands. Visitors can also go sailing on certain days! A few hundred meters from the harbor is the Wadden Viewpoint , where you have beautiful views of the Wadden Sea.

Tourist information and information center about Vikings
There is a tourist information office in Den Oever, but with limited opening hours. In the same building there is also an information center that tells the story about the Vikings and the treasures found in Wieringen.

An alternative to start the route is Restaurant De Zingende Wielen with ample parking and information about the area
(address: Akkerweg 39, Den Oever).

Taste and experience the Wadden Sea
Shrimp fishing, mudflat walking, watching seals or taking boat trips. From the port of Den Oever there are various options to enjoy the Wadden Sea. Various providers can be found in the port.

The route
The route heads towards Oosterland, where the Michaelmas Church from the 12th century dominates the field of view, with charming houses built for the senior staff of the Society for the Implementation of the Zuiderzee Works. One of them is used as a Bed & Breakfast, a unique place to spend the night. A special fact is that the German ex-Crown Prince Wilhelm went into hiding here for a number of years during the First World War.

Via Vatrop , where there is a beautiful viewpoint over the world heritage site The Wadden Sea, we continue cycling to Stroe. The Wieringer Island Museum Jan Lont is located here, where you can experience and taste island life from over a hundred years ago. In the spring, 'forgotten' vegetables are grown in the garden, which are put on the menu by local catering establishments.

Once you have passed the museum, you can deviate from the route for a moment, taking the exit towards Wiringherlant recreation park. At the end of the road, against the dike, you will see a periscope . You can look through that for a great view. And now back to the route.

The Pagan Chapel is also located in Stroe . The story goes that Willibrord founded its first church around the year 700. During the route you will also come across a nice picking garden, where you can pick flowers yourself to take home.

Hippolytushoef is a pleasant village on the route, where the blades of the flour mill'De Onderneming' regularly run at full speed. Along the way you will come across various fruit and vegetable stalls, depending on the season.

Westerland is located on the Amstelmeer. The Amstelmeer is very popular among water sports enthusiasts; Windsurfing is especially popular there. Kitesurfing is also widely practiced. This produces beautiful pictures. The Lutjestrand is a pleasant swimming beach. There are also catering facilities available, Waddenzee campsite is also nearby with an ice cream parlor (with ice cream made in Wieringen).

The continuation of the route is a tour of the Amstelmeer . Before cycling over the dike, it is recommended to take a look at the Bird Lookout, with beautiful views.  The dike was constructed in 1924 and connected the then island of Wieringen to the mainland. The construction of the Amsteldiepdijk was not without problems: the nature reserve De Verzakking, which is located to the right of the dike, was created by the slipping of dike soil. The Amsteldiepdijk thus proved to be an important training ground for the engineers who later constructed the Afsluitdijk.

During the tour the nice town of Van Ewijcksluis is passed.

From junction 90 you are introduced to the polder landscape
According to the original plan, the polder would only be constructed once the Afsluitdijk was completed. But because the Netherlands had a great need for agricultural land, construction was accelerated. On August 21, 1930, the polder dried up. The route passes farms, where you can buy the freshest fruit and vegetables along the way. Highly recommended is the Gallery on the Seabed with unique objects, located between junctions 90 and 95.

The route goes back to Den Oever, via the Robbenoordbos . Oak, beech, maple, poplar, alder and more. A wonderfully varied forest with much to discover. Camping't Bos Roept is located in the middle of the forest and is open all year round.

Via the Ijsselmeer dike and the Afsluitdijk the route ends at the parking lot of the port of Den Oever. Enjoy a delicious fish on a terrace at the harbor, a nice ending to a special tasty route.

Spend the night in Wieringen
Ranging from a B&B in a farm, barn or fisherman's house, to sleeping in a place where engineers from the Afsluitdijk used to live. Check the site under accommodation.
