Description
Southwest of Boxtel you will find the De Kampina nature reserve. This route takes you straight through this 1200 hectare area with dense forests, vast heathlands, mysterious fens and green stream valleys. You will find culture on this route in the charming towns of Haaren, Boxtel and Vught.
Centuries-old castles
The first part of the route runs through a green landscape to Helvoirt. After about four kilometers you cycle past Zwijnsbergen Castle. In the fourteenth century, this estate was a fief with a fortified farm. Over the centuries, the estate regularly changed owners and the farm changed along with it. The current main building was built in the fifteenth century and the hexagonal tower dates from 1552. The building was extensively renovated in 1817 and the beautiful garden was also built at that time. Another attraction on the route is Nemerlaer Castle, just outside Haaren. This castle was first mentioned in 1303 and has been restored several times over the centuries.
A war memorial in Vught
In Vught you will find the National Monument Fusilladeplaats Vught. This monument was placed here to commemorate the 329 resistance members who were murdered here by Dutch SS men. These resistance fighters were brought from various prisons to this location to be shot at the shooting range of the former Vught concentration camp. At the monument you can take a moment to reflect on the horrors of the Second World War.
