St. Anthony, Brecht and Rijkevorsel

On the territory of and next to the built-up area of Rijkevorsel you will find a special nature reserve. Nature reserve De Bonte Klepper, situated in the Voorkempen, consists of seven hectares of fens and forests. Since enthusiastic volunteers took over the area in 1992, the sparse heathland vegetation has flourished. Birches, willows and other trees were pushed back to give an overgrown fen the appearance and size it had in the eighteenth century. In addition to banks and on the sod-cut heathlands, typical heathland vegetation was given the opportunity to flourish. Small sundew, white and brown beak sedge, marsh clubmoss and cotton grass; all characteristic species are represented here. Even the rare small dodder, which grows by extracting food from other plants, can be found in the area, sticking to other plants, such as bell heather and heather. Various birds nest in the trees and between the bushes. The hobby, greenfinch, hawk, golden oriole and the lesser spotted and black woodpecker forage for food on the heath.
