Description
The history of Ingelmunster is strongly influenced by the castle that still stands there today. Situated between the medieval and historical cities of Bruges and Kortrijk, the West Flemish town was nicknamed "the key to Flanders" because of its location. Due to its strategic location, the French king even lived there in 1297.
The castle of Ingelmunster
Ingelmunster Castle was originally a fortified castle. It was built in 1075 on the ruins of a small church from the seventh century. The current building dates from 1736 and is more of a large country house than a castle. The owners who bought the castle in 1986 established a brewery museum there, but it was destroyed by fire. After that, it was decided to give the castle back some of its old, noble style. The castle is now surrounded by a beautiful park.
